Job Detail: Farm Manager

About: The Farm Manager, under the direction of the Director of Agroecology, will oversee all aspects of operating the Merry Lea Sustainable Farm and maintain a regular physical presence at the farm. The farm manager will collaborate with other staff, faculty, students, and volunteers to develop the farm as a setting for teaching and learning about sustainable food systems and
conservation. The Merry Lea Sustainable Farm is a small, diversified, sustainable farm located at the Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center of Goshen College in Wolf Lake IN that
contributes to the Center’s mission of providing environmental education to people of all ages. It includes vegetable plots, fruit and nut orchards, an animal barn and pastures, a passive solar
greenhouse, and a small hoop house.

Position Responsibilities: 

  • Farm Management (85%)

    a. Maintain agricultural spaces in a state conducive to education & outreach in
    collaboration with our collegiate programs, our Master's program, and our public
    programs. Core spaces include:
             i. An intensively managed fruit orchard
             ii. A children’s education garden
             iii. Livestock barn and animals
             iv. A greenhouse and small hoop house
             v. An agroforestry silvopasture project with grazing areas
             vi. A vegetable market garden
    b. Manage paid seasonal farm crew and volunteers
             i. Hiring, coordinating and tasking the summer farm crew (2 full time students June, July, & August)
             ii. Recruiting, coordinating and supervising short term and long term
    volunteers - both individuals and groups

    c. Food Marketing
             i. Coordinate the Merry Lea student CSA
             ii. Coordinate food supplied to internal Merry Lea programs
             iii. Coordinate sale of food to the Goshen College dining hall through AVI
             iv. Coordinate donations of food to local food pantries
             v. Coordinate student u-pick opportunities
    d. Record Keeping
             i. Maintain a digital database detailing care of perennial crops
             ii. Maintain records of inputs used
             iii. Maintain records of food produced and where it was sent
             iv. Issue and record invoices
             v. Process money transfers and payments
             vi. Update budget documents
             vii. Aid the director in managing the farm budget and writing the year-end farm report

  • Teaching and Outreach (15%)
    a. Demonstrate practical skills in gardening and animal husbandry to college
    students as part of our Agroecology Summer Intensive residential semester
    b. Mentor college students as part of our residential on-farm week-long college
    summer internship [non-grading support role]
    c. Interact with children (K-5) through meet-the-farmer experiences as part of our
    Exploring Merry Lea Sustainable Farm fall program
    d. Facilitate on-farm experiences demonstrating environmental education through
    agriculture for our Masters in Environmental Education students
    e. Available for other on-farm or on-campus (Goshen College) public programs as

Position Qualifications: 

  • A bachelor’s degree in agroecology, environmental science, education, or a related field OR in lieu of degree, 4+ years of relevant equivalent experience is required. Candidates must be committed to the community standards, mission and core values of Goshen College.
