Job Detail: Farm Share Program Manager

About VINES:

The essence of VINES’ work is captured in its simple motto: growing food, growing community.  VINES empowers people to improve their lives and communities through urban gardening and connecting urban consumers to rural farmers. The organization formed as a volunteer-led project building community gardens in 2007 but quickly grew as demand for urban gardening space, garden-based education, and access to local food exploded.  VINES became an independent nonprofit in 2010, and now manages a number of programs including a community garden program, the Binghamton Urban Farm (BUF), Grow Binghamton (a summer youth employment program), the Green Thumb Educational Workshop Series, and the Binghamton Farm Share program (Farm Share). Demand for VINES’ programming continues to grow and the organization is working to expand its core programs both within and beyond Binghamton’s urban core.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Manage and plan all aspects of the Program;
  • Recruit, train and support new distribution volunteers and other volunteers;
  • Recruit and maintain relationships with farmers to provide shares for the Program;
  • Recruit members to purchase shares;
  • Develop marketing materials for the program and oversee marketing campaign;
  • Coordinate receipt of shares from farmers on a weekly basis;
  • Coordinate distribution of shares to members on a weekly basis at all distribution locations;
  • Arrange staffing for all distribution locations;
  • Manage SNAP paperwork and process SNAP payments;
  • Manage related grant reporting, billing, and compliance as assigned;
  • Coordinate Member Education to provide food sampling, recipes, cooking tips and cooking demonstrations regularly at each location on a weekly basis;
  • Coordinate with the Community Hunger Outreach Warehouse (CHOW) to pick up and distribute free food to supplement the Program, and adhere to all of their reporting and other requirements;
  • Develop partnerships/collaborations with community organizations to advance the Program; Supervise and coordinate AmeriCorps members, interns, volunteers and other staff as assigned;
  • Establish links in the community, business and local agencies to support and deliver ongoing quality programming that meets the need of local youth;
  • Document and evaluate the impact of the Program in coordination with other staff;
  • Work with the Executive Director to research, identify, and develop foundation and government grant proposals to support the Program;
  • Report data on a monthly basis to the VINES Board of Directors;
  • Represent VINES to the public, community groups, community leaders, colleagues, volunteers, government officials and the general public in a professional manner;
  • Document and evaluate the impact of VINES Farm Share;
  • Assist the Board and other staff with fundraising efforts for VINES;
  • Manage other special projects as assigned;
 

 

Position Qualifications:

  • Customer service experience;
  • Experience related to organic agriculture operations, gardening, or nutrition preferred;
  • Interest and knowledge in the topics of nutrition, sustainability, social justice, and community food systems;
  • Ability to actively recruit program participants from diverse populations;
  • Ability to work as a team with community members, youth, community organizations, volunteers;
  • Demonstrated commitment to mission of VINES and food justice;
  • Sense of humor and ability to manage a sometimes chaotic environment;
  • Effective written and oral communicator;
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team;
  • Ability to work with people from a variety of ages, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds; especially low-income populations;
  • Experience in directing and collaborating with volunteers;
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks for self and volunteers;
  • Proficiency using the internet and Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher required; experience with social media, Wordpress, and email platforms; Experience with or comfort with learning database use and management;
  • Experience in grant writing preferred;
  • Connection or familiarity with the Binghamton community or similar demographic.
 

 

Compensation and Benefits:

This position offers $15.50 per hour. Benefits include paid vacation, holiday, and sick time. and health insurance is offered.
