About Dreaming Out Loud:
Dreaming Out Loud’s mission is to create economic opportunities for the DC metro region’s marginalized community members through building a healthy, equitable food system. Dreaming Out Loud is rebuilding urban, community-based food systems through social enterprise, helping to increase access to healthy food and improve community health, develop low-income entrepreneurs and cooperatives, and train at-risk adult residents for sustainable, family-supporting wages.
DOL’s Food Hub is DOL’s “Social Enterprise” which operates with the goal of promoting and modeling racial and economic justice in the food system. Dreaming Out Loud operates as a “matchmaker” doing the work of reaching out to a range of potential customers, building relationships and supplying them with local produce and products. We target mission-driven organizations like schools, local grocery stores, caterers, health facilities and a growing network of local sourcing businesses with a passion for farm fresh local produce and products and a desire to support DC’s marginalized communities. Our model is constantly evolving and will continue to do so as our capacity increases.
The Food Hub Director is responsible for directing the food operations and growth strategy for DOL’s community food hub activities and effectively managing a lean budget and a small infrastructure base to efficiently move best-quality local farm products to community-based food access points and to our wholesale customers. Participation in all aspects of food aggregation, distribution, and marketing will be required. Service to community needs is paramount.
The ideal candidate will have a background in local and urban agriculture, local procurement, customer service, small business development, community-based partnerships. This position will report to the Operations Director and will be a part of a team of innovators empowered to problem-solve challenges and complete tasks independently
- Supervise the Market Manager and Culinary Production Manager (currently vacant) and work closely with them to to revise and enact direct sales strategies for Black Farm CSA Program, meal and value added production and food recovery activities.
- Set annual professional goals with direct reports and help manage those goals throughout the year with guidance from DOL leadership staff.
- Indirectly supervise Food Hub Assistants and Food Production Assistants, which report to the Market Manager and Culinary Production Manager.
- Ensure a safe, productive, efficient, and supportive working environment for employees, team members, and volunteers. This includes but is not limited to the development and updating of program policy manuals and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); identifying professional development opportunities for all staff under your direction; and keeping track of staff certifications and training.
- Effectively delegate responsibilities so that all staff are engaged fully in the work of enhancing our capacity.
- Collaborate closely with DOL team members, partner farms, and other stakeholders to develop and implement a multi-year business and operating plan for the food hub operations, including sales growth strategies within our distribution area.
- Collaborate internally with the DOL leadership as well as externally with wholesale customers to ensure that the organizational and partner story and brand are transmitted effectively, honestly, and transparently to end-user customers.
- Develop and execute strategy to continue growth of wholesale and retail business while maintaining organization’s standard of excellent customer service.
- Develop closer relationships with wholesale buyers to increase order size.
- Develop innovative ways to increase the number and size of our retail food distribution activities and to drive and increase in CSA customer acquisition.
- Oversee farmers market operations and provide on-site support, as needed.
- Develop improvements to the food-safety regulatory compliance of food hub activities. Must uphold the organization’s careful attention to cleanliness and safety in all aspects of its operation.
- Effectively leverage and enhance our existing CRM and sales management systems by working regularly with contracted tech support.
- Assemble the annual production plan by compiling data from customers and farms to better balance supply and demand.
- Partner with DOL team members, research and evaluation partners to collect key program data.
- Maintain regular and clear communication with producer-owners and DOL team members regarding the status and direction of the business.
Finance and Administrative
- Collaborate with the accountant and bookkeeper to ensure that the enterprise’s financial practices align with our accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Maintain annual budget and cash flow projection in conjunction with DOL’s accountant.
- Assist with grant applications and manage expenditures and funds tracking.
- Process any necessary paperwork with careful attention to detail.
- Bachelor's degree in business, management, or related field, plus at least 3 years of food systems management experience (or at least 5 years of closely related experience).
- Experience in successful business startups with a track record of success in business and financial management.
- Experience in marketing, and a commitment to honesty of message and intent.
- Experience supervising and managing a small team.
- Persuasive sales skills, and a willingness to understand and honor the needs of both producers and customers when making sales.
- Understanding of produce and prepared food quality control, ability to spot and address quality problems.
- An interest in the cooperative principles and the power of producer-owned marketing systems to reform our food systems.
- An unshakeable commitment to the cause of building community-based food systems. Strong commitment to social justice and diversity in all work.
- A willingness to listen to diverse stakeholders, and absorb their concerns into the decision-making process.
- Excellent writing, organization and project management skills with ability to manage multiple conflicting priorities.
- Willingness to travel to meet with customers and producers in a 200 mile radius (approximately on a quarterly basis).
- Willingness and ability to work occasional weekends, early morning, evening hours and holidays as required.
- Ability to work in outdoor temperatures and various weather conditions as needed, overcoming what adversity may arise.
- Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
- A personal understanding of small-scale food production.
- Food hub management experience.
- Ability to make human-based decisions; to employ both logic and love.
- Advanced communication skills and the ability to close information loops and knowledge gaps within an organization.
Wage, Timing, and/or Additional Information:
The annual salary range is $60,000 - $65,000, based on experience and qualifications. This position is eligible to receive benefits
