About the Position

American Farmland Trust seeks a Coordinator of Institutional Partnerships. The Coordinator reports to the Senior Director of Institutional Partnerships and works with program colleagues and the Institutional Partnership team to raise financial support from Foundation, Corporate, Government and other organization sources for AFT’s national and regional/field programs.

Working with program staff and under the direction of the Senior Director of Institutional Partnerships, the Coordinator will identify relevant funding opportunities across a spectrum of appropriate Institutional prospects; quickly apprise appropriate colleagues of these opportunities, their deadlines, and salient factors needing to be considered; provide strategic recommendations to colleagues desiring to submit applications; assist in writing and editing proposals, and provide technical support with all aspects of the application process and submission, as well as tracking report deadlines and assisting program staff with writing and submitting reports in a timely manner. These duties may include managing a defined regional portfolio of prospects, writing proposals, strategizing with program and development staff on how to raise funds for the organization’s top priorities, and supporting the President and other senior leadership to maximize support from Institutional sources.

The position requires a skillful, enthusiastic writer with strong analytical abilities, strategic thinking, and impeccable organization and attention to detail. The Coordinator must be a strong communicator and have the ability to coordinate a team to successfully develop winning proposals. Demonstrated commitment to conservation and knowledge of farmland conservation issues is preferred, but not required. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in securing grants/contracts from Foundations, Corporations, and State and/or Federal Government sources.

 

Qualifications

Skills

  • Demonstrated team player with commitment to the mission, philosophy and values of AFT and interest in some aspect of agriculture or related environmental fields.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team with strong attention to detail.
  • Strong computer skills for managing, tracking, and disseminating (as needed) all critical information. Many institutional grants require on-line applications, so experience in this would be helpful as well.
  • Knowledge of institutional funding and what is required to grants/contracts.
  • Understanding of and interest in environmental and/or agricultural topics.
  • Excellent strategic and writing skills, and ability to develop/edit proposals that are clear, concise, and compelling while strictly adhering to funder guidelines and proposal requirements.
  • Experience in preparing/editing reports to funders, and ability to work with program staff to aid them in submitting excellent reports in a timely manner.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion with funder research and records.
  • Skill in web-based research, and preferably knowledge of prospect research methodologies.
  • Confidence in using databases (experience with Raiser’s Edge preferred), both entry and analysis, to track information.
  • Knowledge of project budgets and ability to review/proof budget information, as well as compare numbers to work in proposal narratives.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in related field and demonstrated success in Foundation/Corporate/Government fundraising.
  • Prefer two to five years of experience, with preference in Foundation/Corporate/Government fundraising.
  • Preference to have experience with federal government proposals and contracting process.
  • Experience with proposal budgeting process and technical proficiency using Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to interact skillfully with Foundation, Corporate and Government program officers.
  • Superior communications skills, both verbal and written.
  • Professional skill preparing and presenting case statements.
  • Proficiency in Raiser's Edge and Microsoft Office (with emphasis on strong excel skills).
  • Demonstrated team player with commitment to the mission, philosophy and values of American Farmland Trust and the ability to be a passionate and highly articulate spokesperson for AFT’s work.
  • Must be organized, creative, proactive, and detail-oriented with a strong ability to prioritize.
  • Have sound judgment in maintaining confidentiality of donor information.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, analytical and organizational skills required, with the adeptness to think creatively and strategically.
  • Demonstrates initiative and ability to work both independently and with others
  • Flexible and able to handle multiple tasks and tight timelines with skill, calm and a good sense of humor, and an ability to work quickly and prioritize tasks.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work as needed to meet deadlines
  • Able to facilitate and lead collaborations with program staff.
