About the Abundant Table
The Abundant Table (www.theabundanttable.org) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization rooted in The Episcopal Church. The Abundant Table’s mission is to change lives and food systems by creating sustainable relationships to the land and the local community. We provide a crucial and unique link in Ventura County, connecting local food production, distribution and nutrition literacy through our farm-to-school and farm-to-table initiatives. We benefit from a dedicated community of supporters that share our vision and commitment to farmworker rights, food justice, and environmental stewardship of the land.
Our programs use land and asset based approaches to empower youth and their families to advocate for sustainability, healthy eating, and food system reform in their homes, schools, and communities.
Since 2009, our programs have directly served over 15,000 people throughout Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. Each year we provide bilingual farm and nutrition education to K-12 students through the "Farmer in the Classroom" program (at least half of the students at these schools qualify for federally-supported free and reduced price meals). We deliver approximately 150 community supported agriculture (CSA) members fresh, locally grown vegetables and manage a roadside farm store with seasonal u-pick and educational offerings. We donate nearly 500 pounds of produce per month to families in need. We grow and harvest over 20,000 pounds of carrots and other vegetables for local school districts’ lunch programs.
About the Food Hub Project
This is a two-year grant funded position through the CDFA Specialty Crops Block Grant, with the potential to continue past the allotted funding. This project brings together multiple stakeholders to formalize and expand an existing food hub pilot project. The demand for locally grown specialty crops has outpaced supply, especially among school districts in Ventura County. The food hub helps bridge the need between specialty crop growers and institutional buyers. The food hub will help an additional fourteen small-mid scale growers meet this increased demand by aggregating and lightly processing multiple specialty crops.
About the Position
In partnership with project stakeholders, the Food Hub Manager position will provide strategic leadership, development and management of all aspects of the Food Hub’s core operations, including the aggregation and distribution of local produce and value-added products to institutional buyers and the management of onsite light processing of fruits and vegetables. This individual will be an employee of The Abundant Table, and this hands-on position will report to and work with the Executive Director and supervise 2-3 Food Hub staff members. It is anticipated that this position would begin as early as February 2018.
This is a new position at The Abundant Table (TAT) and in partnership with a developing farmer’s collaborative at McGrath Family Farm. The successful candidate should have the ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, anticipate issues and develop solutions. The Food Hub Manager will be required to work closely with a wide variety of individuals and organizations, including regional farmers and buyers, academic institutions, regulatory agencies and various other project partners.
