About the Position

This part-time position will specifically be working on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed): Nutrition Education and Obesity Prevention Grant Program. This grant teaches eligible low-income community members how to shop, cook  and eat healthy on a limited budget and lead physically active lifestyles. This position will be required to keep detailed records for reporting and evaluation. The candidate will work independently, be well-organized, and possess a strong attention to detail. Regular travel is required throughout Androscoggin County and occasionally to statewide trainings in a central location (1-2 per year).

The general function and responsibility of this part-time professional position is to coordinate health promotion program activities of Healthy Androscoggin.  This may include, but is not limited to, coordination of initiatives related to nutrition, physical activity, tobacco prevention, substance abuse prevention, childhood lead poisoning prevention, and cultural competency.

This part-time position will be responsible for providing outreach and education in Androscoggin County's New Mainer (immigrant and refugee) communities. The position will start at 20 hours/week with the potential for increased hours.

 

SNAP-Ed Specific Responsibilities

  • Implement Maine SNAP-Ed program deliverables in accordance with USDA SNAP-Ed, Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and University of New England (UNE) requirements.
  • Develop new and strengthen existing partnerships with community-based agencies to provide obesity prevention services, including nutrition education and physical activity programs, to SNAP eligible community members – specifically targeting New Mainer (immigrant and refugee) communities.
  • Partner with local school districts, childcare centers, community centers, and other organizations serving low-income families to implement evidence-based nutrition programs.
  • Implement the statewide social marketing campaign, including promotion and recruitment for SNAP-Ed eligible households in the service area.
  • Work with community partners to develop and/or implement selected policy, systems and environmental change strategies that supplement the direct education and aid in obesity prevention.
  • Attend required trainings and meetings, both in-person and online, in accordance with grant funding.
  • Complete reporting and evaluation processes as set by USDA SNAP-Ed, Maine DHHS, UNE and Healthy Androscoggin/Central Maine Community Health.

 

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience required in: community organizing, obesity prevention, program planning and implementation, public health, health promotion, nutrition and/or health education. 
  • be able to work independently, objectively analyze programs and problem solve.
  • excellent written and verbal communication
  • strong interpersonal skills
  • computer skills, group-facilitation
  • ability to pay close attention to detail. 

Preferred

  • Multilingual: Preferred applicant will be multilingual in English and Somali, Arabic, Portuguese or French. 
  • A Bachelor's degree in public health, health education, nutrition or related field preferred. 
  • Preference will be given for experience in implementing nutrition education and obesity prevention services and/or policies in school or community settings.
  • Valid Maine driver's license and reliable transportation required.
  • Proficient computer knowledge in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
  • Registered Dietitian or training in nutrition preferred but not required.
