About the Positions

McDowell Farm School is looking for someone to join our Spring team of
instructors and farmers! We are located just north of Nauvoo, Alabama and are
part of a bigger camp called Camp McDowell. The season runs from February 15 -
May 18, with schools coming to learn about food and farming, mostly as
overnight field trips. The specific responsibilities are listed below, but the
summary is that you'd be living in community, teaching students from 3rd-12th
grade about farming, participating in the general upkeep of the farm (which
has livestock and plants), and assisting or leading farm projects when you're
not teaching. This is a PAID job and room and board is also included.



Responsibilities

To uphold the program goals and mission of the Environmental Center, teach outdoor farm education lessons to students, and be fully engaged as a member of the MFS program team.

  • Responsible for teaching all program content for students k-12th
  • Work 7 three-hour, daytime teaching blocks (projects, teaching, or observation) weekly
  • Teach 2 -3 evening programs per week followed by facilitation of evening snack
  • Provide a positive experience for all clients (students, parents, chaperones
    and teachers)
  • Participate in feedback, evaluations and final exit interview
  • Responsible for an assigned radio and it’s upkeep
  • Support curriculum by updating and improving curricula and materials with
    Coordinator
  • Follow Farm School expectations when facilitating optional weekend groups through camp and conference

Program and Farm Support

  • Complete projects during the season with Program Coordinator and Farm Manager
  • Attend and actively participate in all staff meetings
  • Support meals and farm staff in dining hall
  • Act as the lead for two or more farm project areas during the season
  • Actively participate in program evaluation
  • Perform regular maintenance duty each week, or as necessary
  • CPR/First Aid certified, Safeguard Trained, Pass background check

Qualifications

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent work experience
  • Demonstrate a respect and affinity for youth education
  • Knowledgeable about sustainable agriculture, environmental, and educational
    issues
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate maturity, initiative, enthusiasm, sense of humor, flexibility, and
    a team spirit
  • Desire to work outdoors and be a member of a friendly and supportive team
