Position Description:

The Program Assistant's primary responsibility is to support Big Green's Program and help carry out the Edible Garden Initiative by working with schools' Garden Teams to ensure they have the skills, materials, personnel and confidence to successfully grow vegetables and teach in their Learning Gardens. This includes primarily working with Big Green's Garden Educators and help lead planting and harvest days at schools with teachers and students. This is an opportunity for individuals interested in working in schools, in the nonprofit sector, and sustainable food sector, while making a positive impact on developing a real food culture in communities. Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with Regional Program Team to achieve defined seasonal goals, and prioritize efforts to promote community through food in all Learning Gardens. 
  • Support Garden Educators at school events with diverse populations of teachers, parents, community members and students at schools with Learning Gardens. 
  • Help lead Kick Off Days, Planting Days and Harvest Days alongside Big Green Garden Educators, which includes teaching K-12 students how to plant and harvest their Learning Gardens. 


Requires Qualifications:

  • Minimum High School Diploma.
  • Experience working with children in an educational setting.
  • Experience instructing and guiding garden demonstrations with children.
  • Familiarity with small-scale organic food production or urban garden, community and home gardening. 
  • Interested in environmental science, health and nutrition, environmental and social justice, food system, and food access. 
  • Ability to work with diverse populations including youth and adults. 
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills. 
  • Organized, able to manage priorities. 
  • Reliable go-getter and a can-do spirit
  • Valid driver's license


Physical Requirements:

  • Occasionally lifts and carries objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Occasionally stoops and bends.
  • Occasionally reaches and grasps with arms and hands. Work involves exposure to outdoors including warm and cold weather. 


Position Details:

  • This is a temporary, part-time hourly paid position, great for someone with a flexible morning schedule. The weekly work schedule is dependent on the number of schedule school events per week. The work schedule and hours per week may be affected by inclement weather. 
  • The job will require, but not guarantee, about 10 to 20 hours per week during the months of August - November, 2018, and March - July, 2019. 
  • Applicants are required to have access to a personal vehicle and pass a background check. 

Compensation: This position is paid hourly, under $15/hr
