Sharondale Mushroom Farm grows the highest quality certified-organic mushrooms and mushroom spawn. We sell specialty mushrooms to grocers and restaurants, and have an expanding web-based spawn business. Sharondale is a leader in developing regionally and seasonally adapted mushroom spawn and the processes for their cultivation. We research and promote the utilization of fungi for small farm diversification and resilience.

Position Description:

Farm Manager works directly with the farmer and manages a small crew to carry out daily operations, which include production, sales, and distribution tasks.

We seek a self-motivated individual with excellent time-management skills, who enjoys working as part of a team, and is interested in supporting, promoting, and developing local food. The farm manager can expect to work 40-45 hours a week; occasional weekend commitments will be necessary. Starting wage for this full-time, year-round position is $13-16/hour commensurate with work experience and demonstrated competencies. The position is open immediately.



  • Oversee daily production operations to include farm and crop maintenance, substrate preparation, harvesting, packing, and distribution

  • Assess stock levels of mushrooms and spawn and coordinate with team and customers to forecast production needs

  • Identify and manage crop diseases and control pests and insects

  • Maintain complete and up-to-date records of systems and protocols, including USDA GAPs and organic-certification records

  • Understand and enforce health and food-safety protocols

  • Direct farm crew activities to accomplish daily tasks efficiently

  • Develop and maintain farm crew cohesion

  • Learn lab protocols and assist when necessary in the lab

  • Maintain clean and safe growing and working environments

  • Manage environmental controls for farm buildings

  • Maintain tools and equipment

  • Communicate supply and maintenance needs to farmer

  • Conduct tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance

  • Complete educational requirements and opportunities based on the evolving needs of the farm

  • Work with farmer to develop new farm products, markets, and systems


  • Communicates effectively with farm, crew, and customers both verbally and in writing as appropriate

  • Motivates, teaches, and directs crew members to achieve farm goals

  • Able to learn proper use of all hand and power tools and farm equipment

  • Able to drive manual transmission farm vehicles

  • Follows detailed instructions closely

  • Utilizes critical thinking skills to identify current or potential problems in farm systems and protocols

    Minimum Qualifications

  • We seek an individual who knows how to work, and is interested in supporting, promoting, and developing local food and mushroom culture

  • Job experience developing and running independent projects

  • Previous farm experience is beneficial but not required

  • Previous experience in a leadership role

  • Interests in mycology, biology, ecology, and general science

  • Familiarity with basic math and scientific principles
