Job Description:

About SFUSD's Future Dining Experience:

SFUSD’s Future Dining Experience is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives, focused on implementing a vision to comprehensively redesign the school food experience in San Francisco’s public schools in a way that is self-sustaining in the long term, engages the school community, and meets the needs and desires of today’s students. This work is accomplished in partnership with San Francisco Unified School District’s Student Nutrition Services (SNS).

Student Nutrition Services is the largest public food service program in the City of San Francisco, serving over 6 million meals and snacks annually. Our mission is to nourish students every day with quality food that enables them to live healthy lives and thrive inside and outside the classroom, and to innovate and strengthen SFUSD’s school food ecosystem. SFUSD recognizes the importance of nutritious school meals in supporting student learning, closing the achievement gap, and creating a more equitable food system.

The Student Engagement Coordinator reports to SNS’s Future Dining Experience Manager, and will be responsible for coordinating youth engagement for the department. This person’s primary role is to lead and grow the department’s School Food Advisory. In addition, the Student Engagement Coordinator will develop internship opportunities for high school students, and will integrate student voice into key SNS decisions.

The SFUSD School Food Advisory (SFA) is a district-wide youth committee that provides high school students with a voice and safe space to share concerns, provide feedback, and influence students’ school dining experience. Students meet weekly, and utilize a design thinking framework to empathize with their peers, synthesize key insights, define systemic problems, and design and test creative solutions. Founded in 2016, the SFA has served 23 students from 6 different schools. We are looking for a Student Engagement Coordinator who will grow and expand this program to include students from all 14 comprehensive public high schools in SFUSD.
