About Rock Steady Farm and Flowers:

Rock Steady Farm & Flowers is a women and queer-owned cooperative farm, rooted in social justice, growing speciality cut flowers and sustainable vegetables in Millerton, NY. We manage a total of 12 acres- 2 in flowers, 6 in veggies, and 4 acres of rotational cover crop. We have diversified customers including our CSA, restaurants, floral designers, food pantries, social justice non-profits, and special events in the Hudson Valley and New York City. Our farm is grounded in close partnerships with other land based projects, neighbors, and non-profits who are also working to build equity in our region and beyond.

We are a growing cooperatively-owned farm, with opportunities for equity for crew members after a trial period. Our current staff and returning crew are women, queer and mixed race people. Even though we do not limit applicants based on these demographics, it is important that the people who join our team are open towards a diverse community both at work and within our local community.

 

1. Position Summary, Flower Marketing and Sales Lead:

The flower operation is hiring a new management level position for the 2019 season. We are looking for someone that has a passion for marketing, specialty cut flowers and is ready to collaborate with the current flower and veggie management team. We list below a broad set of skills that we are interested in, and anticipate that each applicant will have something different to bring to the table. We are flexible to include floral design and/or flower farming into this position to fill out the work week, based on skills, but the primary focus will be on building our flower wholesale business.

 

Position Qualifications:

  • Passion for marketing and sales with direct experience selling to and working with florists, designers, brides/grooms. This includes managing communication around availability, orders, color palettes, delivery and vase life.
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Skills to bring on new clients, designers (both upstate and in NYC), brides/grooms, and other wholesale accounts to the flower enterprise.
  • Experience making farmer’s market/CSA bouquets. Further design experience a plus, but not a requirement.  Please send photos if you have them.
  • Demonstrable experience in co-managing projects, enterprises, or businesses.
  • Attention to detail - regarding crops, harvest and postharvest handling, systems, record keeping and orders.
  • Can stay focused and driven when working independently.
  • Demonstrable commitment to organic/sustainable cut flower farming and building the local flower movement - especially of Hudson Valley flower farmers.
  • Mature, self aware, good communicator. Positive attitude and sense of humor!
  • Clean driver’s license.

 

Compensation:

This is a full time position, 40-46 hours/wk based on season/applicant.  Primary focus is the 2019 growing season from March - November. Compensation is DOE with the possibility of profit sharing / equity in the long run.  Includes 5 paid vacation and 2 paid sick days. 2. Position Summary, Vegetable Crew Lead: 

We are looking to a full-time vegetable crew leader. This skilled farmer will lead the flow of the vegetable crew’s daily tasks, be point person for RSF owners, take part in weekly management meetings and field walks and assist in training new employees and volunteers as needed throughout the season. This position is a great role for someone who may see themselves on the path to worker-owner.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration with current owners and managers of Rock Steady in weekly meetings and daily morning meeting to establish farm priorities.
  • Lead a team of four veggie crew members.
  • Alongside owners, manage propagation, bed preparation, transplanting by hand, direct sowing, weeding, irrigation, and organic pest and disease control.
  • Assist with basic maintenance of facilities and help maintain a clean work environment.
  • Maintain high energy and fast paced work environment for all aspects of day to day farming.
  • Quality control for all farm tasks undertaken by crew and volunteers.

 

Position Qualifications:

  • At least two years farming experience at a scale of 3-acres or more.
  • Ability to manage a team, keep up moral and create positive work environment.
  • Clear communication skills and demonstrated ability to be flexible with daily tasks.
  • Endurance sport experience, athleticism, team comradery as well as healthy amount of competitive spirit.
  • Comfortably able to lift a minimum of 50lbs.
  • Excited about collective group problem-solving and the co-op model.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and willingness to seek guidance as needed
  • Demonstrated commitment to organic, just, and sustainable farming standards.
  • Clean drivers license and reliable transportation for commuting to farm.
  • Experience and sensitivity around working with a diversity of people- including but not limited to different learning styles, cultural background, class, sexuality, gender and ability.

 

Compensation:

This is a seasonal position, from April 1st through November 22nd. Compensation is $13/hr, plus veggies and flowers, for a 40-46 hour work week, with possibility of rotating weekend days for greenhouse management. Includes 5 paid vacation and 2 paid sick days.

 

3. Position Summary, Field Crew:

We are looking to hire three full-time vegetable and two full-time flower field crew positions. Field Crew will assist in all operations on the farm from greenhouse propagation, cultivation, harvest and post-harvest, weeding, irrigation, tractor work, and everything in between. We are looking for passionate and hard working people that both understand our vision for a co-op farm, with a social justice mission, as well as an outstanding work ethic and dedication to some of the most physically demanding work out there!

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist management with propagation, bed preparation, transplanting by hand, direct sowing, weeding, irrigation, and organic pest and disease control.
  • Efficient harvesting, washing and packing. This will be the majority of the crew’s work from July - November.
  • Assist with basic maintenance of facilities and help maintain a clean work environment.
  • Excitement about tractor driving and willingness to learn. Experience a plus!
  • Maintain high energy and fast paced work environment for all aspects of day to day farming.

 

Position Qualifications:

  • For veggie crew- at least one year farming experience at a scale of 3-acres or more. For flower crew- at least 1 year of experience growing flowers and preferably general field scale farming (either veggies or flowers) on 2 acres or more.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work outside in ALL weather conditions including snow, rain, high temps. in the summer, early in the morning.
  • Endurance sport experience, athleticism, team comradery as well as healthy amount of competitive spirit.
  • Comfortably able to lift a minimum of 50lbs.
  • Strong manual dexterity skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • A sense of humor
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions and willingness to seek guidance as needed
  • Clear communication skills and demonstrated ability to be flexible with daily tasks.
