About Minto Island Growers:

Minto Island Growers is a certified organic, 30 acre diversified farm and nursery located in Salem, Oregon. Primarily women owned and managed, MIG prides itself on a collaborative, energetic, and passionate workplace in pursuit of efficient, productive and ethical diversified fruit and vegetable systems. Since 2008, MIG has marketed produce through a 200 member CSA, the Salem Saturday Market, an on-site Farm Stand and local wholesale accounts. Our on-site Farm Stand, ten minutes from downtown Salem, is the heart of the local food community in Salem with plant starts, u-pick blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, flowers, tomatoes and more. A commercial kitchen supports an on-site Farm Food Cart which provides seasonal, farm-sourced lunches and wood-fired pizzas to the community. Other projects include mint propagation as well as picking and processing tea from our ¾-acre Camellia sinensis tea plot—Oregon’s oldest and only commercial scale tea planting.


Position Summary:

Minto Island Growers is seeking applicants for the Field Production Manager for the 2019 season. Management responsibilities include creating, managing, and delegating weekly schedules and tasks related to field production activities for a direct-market certified organic diversified fruit and vegetable farm operating on 30 acres.


Position Responsibilities:

  • Along with the Farm Owner and Farm Manager, implement seasonal crop production plan including:
  • Create weekly task plan include tillage schedules, weeding priorities/strategies, planting dates, fertilizing schedules, etc.
  • Maintain detailed and consistent record keeping
  • Conduct daily field monitoring for pest and disease management
  • Drive and operate a diversity of trucks, trailers, and other heavy machinery
  • Operate tractors and implements to execute various field tasks including:
  • Operate and maintain field irrigation systems (drip tape, hand-lines, travellers, and wheel-line)
  • Train and oversee 1-2 field production assistants in basic tractor and irrigation work
  • Together with the Farm Manager, coordinate perennial crop maintenance (blueberry, raspberry, strawberry) including mowing, trellising, pruning and fertility
  • Participation in other farm tasks alongside the farm crew
  • Together with the managerial team, maintain cleanliness and order of equipment, harvest tools, materials, as well as the shop and warehouses
  • Potential larger role in special projects such as compost, pollination and exploration of biodynamic practices


Position Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3 years experience working with sustainable farming operation(s), including experience operating tractors and managing irrigation; management experience desired
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong communicator
  • Sense of humor!
  • Flexibility, capacity to adapt to new systems, penchant for creative problem solving
  • Self-motivation, initiative & attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain and model efficient and focused work pace
  • Leadership skills and collaborative in a team setting
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor on a daily basis often in adverse conditions
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Clean driver’s license
