How can we use food procurement policy to drive health equity?

In this webinar, we’ll explore how institutional food purchasing can be used to build a more just food system and promote economic and health equity. Institutions like government agencies, hospitals, and school districts purchase food and drinks in large quantities every day. When these institutions make purchasing decisions — and develop purchasing processes — that center health equity and environmental considerations, their spending can generate wins for communities, workers, and businesses.

The presenters will cover the following topics:

  • A “good food values” approach to food systems and purchasing
  • The connection between procurement and health equity
  • The value of local economies and diversity in the food business
  • Procurement policies and their intersection with COVID-19
  • Resources for incorporating good food values into food procurement policies

The COVID-19 crisis makes institutional food purchasing more crucial than ever for good health and economic prosperity. Communities of color, people with low income, and immigrants are disproportionately affected by COVID-19 and the economic effects of the pandemic. For these communities, food procurement policies can support access to the drivers of good health and economic prosperity. Governments and institutions should focus on procurement policies as immediate and long-term strategies to reduce health inequities.
