Job Detail: Environmental Education Coordinator


As the Environmental Education Coordinator, you’ll work closely with the Environmental Education program lead in developing and implementing the Department’s K-12 school education and outreach programs, which focus primarily on zero waste, water conservation, and toxics reduction. You’ll supervise and train early-career professionals responsible for school- and community-based outreach, so you bring experience and enthusiasm in mentoring and managing teams. Ultimately, you’re excited to leverage your passion and skills to move the needle on positive environmental behavior change in children, youth, and the adults and educators in their lives.
Serving in a Coordinator-level position (Class 5640), you’ll work under the supervision of the Class 5642 Senior Environmental Education Specialist, responsible for defining annual goals and project scopes.
Position Responsibilities: 
  • Coordinate, implement, and evaluate community-­based social marketing campaigns and initiatives that increase participation in environmental practices and programs
  • Train, supervise, and mentor staff responsible for education, outreach, and administrative support
  • Deliver and help develop educational programs, curricula, and communications materials targeted to San Francisco students, school staff, and principals
  • Maintain working partnerships with a network of environmental education organizations, local non­profits, city agencies, and school stakeholders
  • Perform regular research and critical analysis of all environmental education efforts
  • Develop campaign and project reports and present findings to relevant stakeholders, as assigned
  • Assist with researching, selecting and managing contractors
  • Represent the Department at City functions and community/stakeholder convenings, as directed

Position Qualifications: 

Possession of a baccalaureate degree in public administration, business administration, biology, environmental sciences, accounting, or a related field (e.g., education) from an accredited college or university; AND

Two (2) years of experience performing duties similar to those described in this class, within the specialty area of environmental education; AND

A minimum of twelve (12) months of experience in public outreach programs; AND

A minimum of twelve (12) months of experience in supervising staff.
