About SCHF

Salt City Harvest Farm (SCHF) is a diverse 32-acre urban-edge farm near Syracuse, NY, that serves as a bridge for New Americans as they adjust to their new surroundings, language, and culture. The Salt City Harvest Farm provides land on which New Americans grow and harvest culturally important food for their families and the community. New Americans share farming knowledge while forming cross-cultural friendships, practicing language skills, and working the land collaboratively.


About the Position

 We are looking for a self-directed individual with a commitment to food justice issues and sustainable agriculture to serve as a farm manager as we expand the existing programs of SCHF. This person will be responsible for agricultural management of the farm, including an existing apple and stone fruit orchard, vineyard, vegetable production, and expansion into other commercial and specialty crops for market sales. This year the farm manager will help to develop a new incubator farm on the site for training New Americans to manage production on small-scale plots. The incubator operation is funded by the Refugee Agricultural Partnership Program(RAPP) in coordination with Refugee Immigrant Self-Empowerment (RISE) and Brady Faith Farm in Syracuse. We welcome candidates who enjoy working with diverse communities and are committed to helping us develop the unique opportunities of this farm and its programs.

 This position is seasonal (from April 2 to Nov. 2), with weekly hours varying from approximately 20 hours in the spring to full time commitment during the summer growing season. There is also the potential for expanded hours beyond the growing season. Salary is commensurate with experience. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.



Community Farm (35%)

  • Coordinate transportation for New Americans to the farm 3 times a week.
  • Manage production on 2 acre community vegetable farm
  • Assist New American participants with any on-farm technical needs, including accessing       water, tools, and rototilling. Provide direction to the participants working in the       “community farm,” including assistance in organic weed & pest management, soil-      building, and composting.
  • Routine maintenance of farm equipment

Incubator Farm (25%)

  • Train New Americans on aspects of production methods on 1/8 acres sites including       planning, soil, pest, and weed management, irrigation, harvest and post harvest practices,   and selling produce at market.

Market Farm (25%)

  • Work with volunteers and farm assistant to provide a weekly CSA share .
  • Coordinating diverse marketing options to farmers markets and other local venues.
  • Oversee 1.5 acre apple orchard and vineyard operation including disease and pest       management, harvest, and identifying market options.

Leadership & Communication (10%)

  • Work with New American farm assistant, including delegating responsibilities.
  • Oversee student interns and volunteers
  • Build relationships with community groups and other supporting members of SCHF
  • Interface with our farmer mentors regarding soil and crop health, especially crop planning, water management, and pest concerns.
  • Communicate with the farm’s Advisory Board to report progress, voice concerns, etc. and attend monthly board meetings.

Record Keeping (5%)

  • Keep record of produce planted, harvested, and sold. Create metrics for both tracking       vegetable production in the community and market farms.
