About Snug Harbor
Snug Harbor was founded in the early 1800s as a private charitable retirement home for sailors. After 140 years, the charity left the property and Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden was formed. Today Snug Harbor is a vibrant arts center, botanical garden, and public park: a place where history, architecture, gardens, agriculture, visual arts and performing arts come together to provide a dynamic experience for all ages. Located less than 1 ½ miles from the Staten Island Ferry and easily accessible by public transportation, Snug Harbor’s stunning campus features 28 architecturally significant buildings (several of which are among New York City’s first landmarks), a two acre urban farm, and fourteen themed gardens that include a traditional Chinese garden and a Tuscan garden, as well as wetlands and park land on a unique, free, open campus. The campus also is home to several other nonprofit institutions and small businesses. Snug Harbor is a must-see destination that provides arts, gardens, nature, education, and entertainment for the residents of Staten Island and the City of New York.
