CCE of Albany County is seeking full time educator to serve as a team member on the Capital Area Agricultural and Horticultural Program (CAAHP) team, which serves Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Schenectady and Washington Counties.
The educator plans, designs, implements and evaluates educational and applied research programs for livestock producers including (but not limited to): beef, sheep and swine production. Identify emerging areas in the livestock industry and address high priority emerging areas (examples of emerging areas could include aspects of alternative fiber production such as llama and alpaca farming). Conduct Extension education programs utilizing a variety of informal education methodologies. Make connections between Cornell and other land grant/research institutions and livestock producers in the six-county region. Utilize a commodity program development committee comprised of diverse individuals from the region to set the direction of educational and applied research programs and to focus the impact of the educator.
The educator holding this position will also assist with the design and implementation of the advisory structure for the Capital Area Agriculture and Horticulture Program. Develop alternate areas of expertise based on program needs in the region, interest, and abilities. Provide regional leadership and technical backup in one of the following areas: outreach and media contact; water quality relative to livestock production, animal welfare, food safety or other areas as defined by the management team.
This position will require the use of multiple delivery methods and the individual employed must have the ability to manage multiple projects.
This position is employed by CCE of Albany County, but works out of CCE of Rensselaer County in Troy, NY.
- Master's Degree in a field appropriate to the position including animal husbandry and a minimum of two years progressively responsible experience in Cooperative Extension or equivalent professional experience in education in an academic or industry setting.
- Demonstrated ability to develop, initiate, implement, teach, and evaluate informal adult and youth educational programs to address diverse audiences.
- Recognized ability to identify and utilize program resources within the community.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively through oral, written, and visual channels using traditional tools as well as innovative applications of electronic technology (e.g., computers, audio, video, etc.).
- Computer skills: proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, database and internet software.
- Ability to lead and to delegate.
- Demonstrated experience and success with fund development and grant writing. Demonstrated ability to manage resources.
- Ability to manage long-term goals within a context of day-to-day deadlines. Ability to organize work and set priorities; ability to handle multiple tasks; and to work under pressure.
- Ability to meet regular travel requirements associated with this position. A valid NYS driver's license with the ability to drive and driving record acceptable for Association insurance coverage are required.

Program Assessment - 20%
- Apply in-depth subject matter knowledge to identify gaps and trends in commercial livestock production in the CAAHP region.
- Develop program needs assessment.
- Analyze program needs.
- Make recommendations for programmatic offerings, enhancements or improvements.
- May be involved in multidisciplinary team efforts to assess program.

- Form and manage a commodity or subject matter based regional program advisory committee (one production and service).
Program Development - 20%
- Apply high level and in-depth disciplinary subject matter knowledge to develop CAAHP commercial livestock production educational strategies. Utilize input from the regional program advisory committee to build and strengthen cutting edge research demonstration and educational program.
- Create fairly complex and innovative educational program in a specialized subject matter area.
- Research, identify and select existing resources for the program.
- Create program materials to address clients’ needs.
- Interpret CAAHP and University program direction to create educational programs.
- Ensure program development is within scope of the statewide Plan of Work.
- Structure programs to meet the need of diverse program participants.
- May be involved in multidisciplinary and multi-association team efforts to develop program to address priority issues.
- Serve as the direct linkage with Cornell University and with other Land Grant University faculty and program units for program development guidance.
- Develop well-integrated association educational efforts.
- Develop program to meet changing local issues.

- Use a system of ongoing involvement of citizens in the program development process which expresses the demographics of the community.

Program Delivery - 15%
- Apply in-depth subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans to deliver CAAHP livestock production educational program.
- Teach the existing educational program as defined.
- Provide educational programming to targeted audiences that own various livestock species in the six county area including but not limited to: nutrition, beef quality assurance, general animal husbandry, principles for grazing animals on pasture, animal health and disease prevention, and housing.
- Provide technical support and leadership to county-based staff working in the area of livestock production. Strengthen and enhance the educational connections between the commercial and community livestock education programs.
- Teach the innovative educational program with discretion.
- Foster acceptance of program, methods and policies to address community and individual needs and consider diverse audiences.
- Stay abreast of new and accepted teaching technologies to provide effective educational programs.
- Serve as subject matter expert in discipline; provide highly complex nonstandard responses.
- Interact with program participants.
- Represent CCE before the public, community leaders, government officials, Cornell or other land grant universities as part of program delivery.

- Conduct applied research in conjunction with Cornell and/or Land Grant University faculty as outlined in CCE program definition and standard that addresses the needs of producers in the region.
- Collaborate with Cornell and/or Land Grant faculty to design or create applied research collection framework as outlined in CCE program definition and standard.
- Collect, process and analyze diagnostic laboratory samples.
- Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University and with other Land Grant University faculty and program units for guidance in applied research.
- Communicate social and economic changes to Cornell University specialists that may be studied and/or acted upon.
- May prepare written materials for research publications.
- Ensure applied research is within scope of the statewide Plan of Work.
Direction - 5%
- Program Direction -May provide highly complex administrative tasks to plan the educational program. Interpret CAAHP Association program direction to plan educational programs. Interpret University program direction to plan educational programs. Utilize in-depth subject matter knowledge to plan the delivery of established educational program goals. Utilize in-depth subject matter knowledge to plan the structure of delivering educational programs via various methods. May assist in the design of a system of ongoing involvement of citizens which expresses the demographics of the community. Work with appropriate team members to address broad agricultural industry/general public concerns in a timely, efficient manner.
- Financial Direction - May provide input to the planning of a unit budget based on program feasibility needs. Initiate and develop grant or other funding proposals to secure ongoing or new funding to support and enhance educational program offerings.
- Communications/Marketing Direction - May provide complex administrative tasks in planning for mass media efforts related to program/ function. May plan effective strategic external and internal program communication/ marketing efforts. May assist in developing shared CAAHP Association vision, building understanding around the mission and developing appropriate goals and strategies to advance the mission. May assist in developing a brand awareness that aligns with the statewide Plan of Work. May assist in utilizing good marketing strategies in the generation of an appropriate public image. May assist in developing CAAHP marketing program, keying in on successes, research initiatives and flagship programs.
- Staffing Direction - Perform moderately complex tasks related to supervisory responsibility as applicable. Assist in planning organizational leadership development strategies. Make recommendations to staffing plan development process.
Coordination/Operation - 5%
- General Coordination - May provide a limited amount of moderately complex tasks related to program needs.
- Program Coordination - May provide moderately complex administrative support to the implementation of the assessment, development, delivery, research and evaluation of established educational program goals. On a regular basis transports self, also frequently lifting/moving or transporting program materials and resources to community-based settings. Compile existing resources into educational program materials. Compile, organize and inventory educational materials such as training aids, fact sheets, newsletters, exhibits, and demonstration projects. Implement established program schedule. Schedules educational outreach directly with community and constituent groups. Collect evaluation data from program participants based on existing framework. Collect applied research data based on existing framework. Collect program needs assessment data based on existing framework. Assist in coordinating the program implementation, planning and activities efforts.
- Financial Coordination/ Operation - May provide moderately complex administrative support to accomplish financial goals within assigned program/ function. Submit grant or funding proposals. Complete required financial documentation to meet the grant or budget requirement.
- Communications/Marketing Coordination - May provide moderately complex administrative support to conducting mass media efforts related to program/ function.
- Staffing Coordination/ Human Resource Operation - May perform moderately complex tasks related to supervisory responsibility as applicable. Implement established staffing plan to ensure the program need is met.
Professional Improvement - 5%
- In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes and Association priorities.
- Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Hours & Compensation:
This is a full time, exempt position. Compensation paid at the rate of $50,000 annually. Excellent benefits, based on eligibility, including:
